Master's Scholarship Program (MSP)

The Master’s Scholarship Program addresses issues of improving educational opportunities at the master’s level for students in underrepresented minority categories. The objectives of the program are: 1) to encourage academically gifted U.S./permanent resident students in these populations to pursue graduate research in areas consistent with SRC Global Research Collaboration (GRC) goals, and 2) to develop a cadre of highest quality minority candidates for doctoral study and hire by GRC companies.

The Master’s Scholarship Program was created in 1997 for the purpose of attracting qualified students who are also in under represented minority categories to graduate study in areas of interest to the semiconductor industry. In 1999, the program was opened to women as a category and has since been opened to underrepresented students holding refugee or political asylum status in the U.S. Currently, the Master’s Scholarships are administered by either GRC or the SRC Education Alliance.

Eligibility

The Master's Scholarship Program is open to students who:

  • are women or are members of an underrepresented minority category (African-American, Hispanic, Native American)
  • meet admission requirements for graduate school at a participating university
  • are U.S. citizens or have permanent resident, refugee, or political asylum status in the U.S.
  • are planning to pursue a Master's degree with research relevant to microelectronics under the guidance of an approved faculty member and under an approved research program
  • are willing to provide a copy of his/her master's thesis to GRC where appropriate for publication to the SRC secure website

Support Level

The Master's Scholarship Program provides:

  • full tuition and fee support for up to two years of master's level study
  • living stipend of $2,186/month, for up to two years of master's level study
  • an unrestricted annual gift of $2,000 to the department in which the student is enrolled

How to Apply

The Master's Scholarships are offered through a national competition and are awarded based on minority or female status, and outstanding academic achievement. Application materials are distributed in November and are due in February. Notice of Scholarship competition is through universities having research contracts with GRC, approved research sponsors, the GRC website, and other sources as appropriate.

Application to this program does not obligate a candidate to accept the award if selected. Prior to the candidate's agreement to enter this program, GRC will supply complete details regarding the terms of the award.

Industry Advisors

Industry Advisors are an important element in the Master’s Scholarship Program, providing mentoring for students to help ensure a successful academic experience. Industry Advisors are encouraged to maintain close contact with the Scholars they mentor by electronic mail, telephone, and personal contact. Internship opportunities will be made available through the Industry Advisor as appropriate.

GRC makes every effort to consider each student and prospective Industry Advisor individually, and recommendation is sought from the faculty advisor. Criteria that are considered in the selection of Industry Advisors include:

  • enthusiastic desire to participate in the education of the outstanding young men and women who are the participants in this program
  • area of technical interest compatible with that of the student’s interest
  • participation in the research as an Industrial Liaison or industry mentor
  • convenience of and availability for interaction with the student

Although the Industry Advisor’s role is primarily for the benefit of the student, there are also benefits to the Industry Advisor and to participating companies by providing a close relationship with the student for hire at completion of the Master’s degree or upon completion of the doctoral degree.
